This project is one I discovered on another blog, which can be seen over to the right --> under the tab "things I am loving." It turned out to be a good beginning sewing project, but I have to tell you, it took us a good couple of days. This is because I wanted to be sure that it was not only a lesson in sewing, but also a lesson in the importance of visualizing, planning, and carrying out the plan. So, I showed the girls the project, we drew up a plan, made a list, went to the store and bought what we needed, then came home to make it. Greta even decided that she should probably practice with just paper first, which was a good idea.
This is the plan Mali came up with:
The next step was selecting the shapes for the pockets and cutting out paper patterns of them, then using the paper patterns to cut our felt pieces.
I sewed the words on each pocket piece, and then they sewed the pieces onto the banner. I did help with their sewing too, only because they "got tired." They each discovered that they could do it alone, which was the point. Greta said, "I didn't know I could sew!!"
After all the sewing, followed by decorating with buttons and ribbon, the banners were complete! The girls each proudly hung them by their beds.
