POETRY

One of the things Mali enjoyed today was substituting her own words in a poem. First, we read this poem:

What can you do?

Little bird, little bird, what can you do?
I can build a nest. Can you?

Little mouse, little mouse, what can you do?
I can run a race. Can you?

Little cat, little cat, what can you do?
I can catch a mouse. Can you?

Little frog, little frog, what can you do?
I can dive and swim. Can you?

Spider, tell what you can do.
I can spin a web. Can you?

I read the first line of every stanza, and Mali read the second line. Then, she came up with five things she can do. Together, we substituted the first word into the sentences. Then, she wrote the rest of the sentences on her own, and we read it together.

At this point, I would have added in drawings of the verses, but she was tired, so it was time for a break.
