KICK OFF

Here we go, into this homeschooling world. Yesterday was a great start! We decided to kick it off with an outing to the Nature Center. We had a great time with friends, and the new discovery center was awesome!! The only regret I have is not getting pictures of Olivier, Chloe, Finn, or the mamas! Greta was patient and independent for much of the day. We had a math lesson in the morning, Nature Center from 10-1, a reading and writing lesson in the afternoon, and swim lessons to top it off. When Mark asked the girls how their first day of homeschool was, Greta promptly said, "Good" and Mali said, "Double good!"

I'm glad we got off to a good start. Already today, we had more challenges with the younger two, and with motivation, but it still went well. One of the best things about it is not hurrying. We have plenty of time to complete what we are supposed to complete. For example, this morning, we did science and reading (in the middle, Mali got tired, so she went to get a drink of water and I got out the clay for some re-focusing), then took a long break. During the break, we had a casual snack and music (Mali learned to stay on the melody while I sing harmony and to sing her part of a round by herself). Then we went back and did some math and reading. We were done with all of this before lunch! So now is the afternoon, and there is lots of time for free play --just what I was wanting out of this!

I hope for more days like these, and I know there will be more challenges. I hope to get more creative about integrating our lessons into our life experiences. So far, so good!

We had a great time. I hope for many days like this. The moments that make it feel like the right choice!

lame question:

how do you know what you are "supposed" to get done?

oh, the program we are doing is so structured that it provides a plan for each day, with lessons. i check off every step of the lesson we do, and it automatically calculates our time and how much more we have left. if we miss a day (like yesterday when we were in the ER), the system automatically shuffles so that we can make up the time we missed. we can do as much or as little as we like, but we are supposed to get in a certain amount of time per week.

make sense?
