It is a thrill as a parent to watch your child learn to read and write! There are so many thrills in parenthood. This is just one of them. This morning, Mali drew a picture of our new fish: Violet Rose and Alana. She wrote on the picture how to take care of them. I just love reading kids' phonetic writing. In case you need help translating, this picture says, "This is how you take care of a fish. Give fish two pinches of fish food a day. Some fish need warm water. Often fish live in the ocean. This is Violet Rose and Alana."

As I was scanning this, I went to look for Greta's work from this morning. She colored a beautiful picture of scribbles and dots in a circle with careful small circles around the perimeter. She had me write on the bottom, "These circles are God moving around the whole world. When you see this, you will know that God is everywhere." Then she took it to Mark and told him to write the music. She said, "It goes. . . God grows 1 by 1, 2 by 2, and 4 by 4. God grows round like a circle and comes back knocking at your front door." She sang it to the tune of "Love Grows." Well, I went to find this masterpiece to scan it onto the blog, but was quickly reminded that Greta doesn't just color pictures. Oh, no. That's only the first step. I found her picture cut into a bunch of pieces, then covered in tape, holding it in a different arrangement, with a hair bow attached to the top. She goes all-out. I can't really scan her final product, so a description will have to do.
She also colored a picture of Bambi and covered every inch around him black (no white left on the paper). She showed it to me and said, "See all that black? Do you know what that is? That is the heat coming out of Bambi's body. Bambi is a heat source!" Then she proceeded to fold it up, wrap it in bright green tape, tie a piece of fake fur around it, and clip an orange bow on top.
