Mali is the second from the right. This was quite an event, and Mali loved it. She loved being a "real ballerina" in a "real show." I wondered how it would go for her, since she can be so shy, but when she got up on stage she was happy and content and confident. It was great to see. As I have mentioned before, there are issues I still struggle with surrounding this whole dance culture. Mostly, what I have learned is to watch Mali and to choose how to view it. For example, I could watch this and be distraught over her learning to conform rather than express herself, or I could look at it as a lesson in working together as a whole. When I watch Mali, she is happy and sure, and her dance class has improved her coordination and inspired her to make up dances at any time in any place -- just when her spirit moves. When I see those things, nothing else matters.
Afterwards, she enjoyed her flowers. She recently told me that she's always wanted real flowers by her bed, so her recital flowers were a wish come true.
