KEEPING UP
Since I spend all day everyday with the girls, I can usually figure out what their different stories and pretend play plots are referring to. This morning I had a little difficulty keeping up with Greta. I knew it was some combination of Trumpet of the Swan and the Fox went out on a Chilly Night, but what else?
Greta: Hi, I'm Sam Beaver, and I love swans.
Me: Hi, Sam.
Greta: The swans all flew to Africa.
Me: Oh, you must miss them.
Greta: Yes, I do. But the fox didn't go.
Me: Oh, why not?
Greta: Because the fox doesn't have wings, so he can't fly, so he's not smart.
Me: Oh, I see. Will the swans come back some day?
Greta: Oh yes, when it gets cold in Africa, they will fly back here.
Me: Ah.
Greta: But the fox is going out tonight to pray to the moon.
Me: Is he going to the farmer's pen?
Greta: Yep, but there won't be swans there. They are in Africa.
Later, different story. . .
Greta was noticing my pregnant belly.
Me: Can you believe there's a little baby curled up in there?
Greta: That's silly. Is it sitting on it's tail?
Me: No, silly. It doesn't have a tail.
Greta: Yes it does (giggling).
Me: Do you have a tail?
Greta: No, but Daddy does.
Me: Ah - hah. Now I understand. Do boys have tails?
Greta: Yep.

The last line of Greta's first story with the swans not being in the pen, because they'll be in Africa reminded me of a punch line from one of Garrison Keillor's jokes. It was one of those jokes where it was a series of little stories and you had to remember the details to get the ending... am I making sense? I'll tell you the joke sometime. It's funny.
You and a little boy...hmmmmm...I wonder if she's right???
Missing you here at Sunward.. The gardens are being planted, and kids are outside running about. Thinking of you all with a warm smile.
oh, i know three sisters (who are now all graduated from high school) who referred to their dad as having a tail.
i forgot about that.
very cute.
wow, greta and eliza could make stuff happen.
Oh, Katie, this made me laugh out loud! Thank you for that!
