We found these to be the 3 most useful things for traveling with kids:
1. The Ergo: our most beloved carrier, which carries kids up to 50 lbs. on the front, side, or back. We use it mostly for the back, but Greta still fits in the front. On hikes, if Mali gets tired, she can still hop in the back (she's 40 lbs.)

2. Laptop Lunchbox: if you haven't discovered this yet, it's a must! It's so awesome. Intended for kids' school lunches, it has several small boxes (some with lids, some not) which fit neatly in a compact box that snaps shut (so that those boxes without lids can still keep things fresh). We used it for travel entertainment, and it was perfect! For lunches, you can also buy an insulated cover, but we don't have that (yet).

3. Germ buster: we could be seen as obsessed as we traveled with hand sanitizer everywhere we went. Because we are at risk of needing to eat at any given moment, the germ buster came everywhere with us!

oh, that lunch box.
I am SO adding the Ergo and the Lunchbox to my list of must-have's! Over Christmas, dad pulled out the denim blue with rainbow stripe backpack they used for us kids in the 70's and early 80's. We've been using that but I think it's close to needing a nice leasurly retirement - and it's not so compact as the Ergo!
Oh, the Ergo is SOOOOOOO NICE!!! I think it definitly is a must have!
Katie,
Wow...your trip looks so wonderful. I can see my boys loving those lunch boxes. Yes, I'd be honored to have my blog linked to yours!
