HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DEAR MALI

5 years ago today, our dear sweet Amalia Ruth was born. We are amazed by her tenderness, her compassion, and her heart of pure gold. She has enriched our lives like we'd never imagined. We love you, Mali!

(more on her special day to come)

OOOOOOOOO Mali, how I love you !!! I remember the very first moment I saw you! I loved you AT ONCE! I was sewing all night long, on the turtle quilt, while we were waiting for you to get out. My fingers were tired, and my eyes were tired and then ! There you were !!!! I wasn't tired any more! Just oh, sooooooooo happy! And Mama and Daddy had these great big grins on their faces, and Aunt Wendy was there, smiling, and the nurses were smiling, the midwife was smiling. I think, Mali, that the whole world was smiling, on the morning you were born. Thank you for being so wonderful!

My favorite Mali memory: playing in the leaves at the nature center in Ann Arbor, and talking about what happens to the leaves after they fall. I did my best to explain decomposition at a three-year-old level, then watched while Mali started carefully tearing the leaves into pieces. "What are you doing, sweetie?" I said. "Making dirt!" said Mali.

Happy birthday Mali! I love and miss this girl so much.
