TENDER SHOVEL, FAR AT SEA

The girls both sing the songs from the Peter Pan musical from memory. One day, they wanted me to sing the song, "Tender Shepherd" so I did.

"Tender shepherd, tender shepherd," (Greta: "NO! It's tender shovel!!)
"Tender shovel, tender shovel (I'm trying not to crack up),
Let me help you count your sheep.
One, say your prayers and
Two, close your eyes and
Three, safe and happily
Fall asleep, fall asleep (Mali: "No, no, no, Mama. It's far at sea!!!)
Far at sea, far at sea.

It reminded me of when my sister, Jen, and I would sing songs with alternate lyrics. Jen was (and probably still is) the queen of creating new lyrics to songs from her imagination. One I remember us singing as young girls was:

"Silent night, holy night, all is calm all is bright,
Round yon virgin, covered in night. . . "

When I was a senior in high school, we sang "Jingle Bells" in choir. When I read the words for the first time, I almost pointed out to the 60-person choir and said, "The lyrics are wrong! It's not 'bells on bobtail ring,' but 'bells are 'bout to ring!" Let's not get started about camp songs! "... And He will lift you up," and I was always singing (still do), "... And He will live to ahhh." WHAT?!?!?! Your girls' lyrics make perfect sense to me! :)
