MORE FUNNY CONVERSATIONS

Greta is so in love with Wilbur (from Charlotte's web) that she has taken to naming anything that remotely resembles a pig Wilbur. A couple weeks ago, the girls were at the thrift store with Uncle Paul and got to pick out a beany baby each. Greta picked a little red bull with horns, and promptly named it Wilbur. She's been introducing "her Wilbur" to us repeatedly. This morning she said to me, "Know what my Wilbur name is?" and I said, "what?" She said, "Her name is Duckie." Okay. . . . I think she's more interested in the process of having a conversation than making any sense. Or maybe the fact that her little red bull who is named Wilbur because she thinks it's a pig is named Duckie DOES make sense to her!

Or, using the theory of Douglas Hofstadter, she has just invented a new level of categorization that we don't fully understand. While we think that "Wilbur" would merely be a subcategory of "pig", to Greta "Wilbur" has become a unique category that is independent of "pig". Children are capable of creating beautiful categories and connections for the world around them that we adults seem to lose as we get older.

Or, I am just reading too much into the conversation of a wonderfully silly little girl.

Well, yes, that really could make sense, because "Wilbur" has become a dear friend to her, with many different faces. . . s/he shows up in many forms. The imagination is a wonderful, mysterious world, and thank goodness we have children around to remind us of that!
