The other night, when I thought the girls were on their way to bed, I found Mali in the kitchen. She had scrounged around enough to find a whole line-up of different containers, and she was tapping them, experimenting with the sound. She said, "I'm making these into music." At that moment, I vowed to make time for this experiment. So today, we dug out some glass jars, tried lots out until we found the ones with the best tone and filled them each enough to make a scale. We have music cards that are color coordinated, so we colored the water (and added milk to some, so the color would show up) to match the cards' notes. Mali has been using this method to sightread some familiar songs on the piano. This added a new dimension to that, and now she is excited about playing songs on the jars. It really does take a lot of processing to look at the card, match the color to the jar, and tap the jar, and then to try to do it in rhythm!
Besides the fun we had, the jars are beautiful, especially in the springtime sunshine that we are getting today!

Katie you are so creative! That was great!!
This reminded me of the bottle choir I made for our mod at Christmas. Do you remember that? Somewhere I have pictures. I just remember that "Up on the Rooftop" was our greatest hit!
