We went to check out Savannah this weekend, and it was definitely a hit! We had heard was a great city it was, and it was a destination we wanted to hit while living in the south.
Driving late into the night, we crashed at a KOA, and were greeted in the morning by several kinds of hungry ducks and swans. The island across the lake from us was a bird sanctuary, so the trees were decorated with clusters of white birds.

We spent the morning on the beach, which included lots of sand play, running up and down with the waves, shell collecting, and even a real-live starfish sighting! The girls especially had a blast. Those of you who know about Mark's shark phobia should be impressed with the picture of him actually touching ocean water!

Even though we were very tired after the beach, we went in to see the city next. It is a true southern city, with tropical foliage and moss and ferns dripping from trees and even growing out of the buildings' brick. It's also a true artist's city, where you can find streets and streets full of art studios and shops, many street musicians, and local art everywhere you go. Another piece of the city's identity is the fact that it's a coastal city, so fresh seafood abounds, and fishing and dolphin tours are around every corner. It's also a place that is so deeply-rooted in history, and that's evident in the beautifully historic architecture all over the city.

One of the best parts was meeting up with some friends from way back. We got to visit with them for a few hours and meander around River Street awhile before packing back into the van for a sleepy drive home.

All I know about Savannah is from reading "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" (which I really liked)...I've always wanted to visit that place.
I have a friend from high school who lived there a few years and LOVED it!
There's just SOMETHING about the real old cities, you know?
