I never experiment with bread, so this was a first. I adapted a recipe from "Mennonite Country-Style Recipes" and came up with this:
1/2 cup warm water (not hot -- I learned on Suze's blog that you should be able to hold a finger in it for 10 seconds)
2 pks yeast
1t. sugar
Combine these and stir until dissolved. Set aside.
1 cup oats
1/2 cup whole wheat flour
3/4 cup brown sugar
1T. salt
Mix in a bowl.
2 cups boiling water
2T. butter
Add, sitrring until well mixed. Cool to lukewarm and add yeast mixture.
1 cup raisins (or cranberries might be good!)
Add.
5 cups flour
Add and knead until smooth and elastic (8-10 minutes).
Grease, cover and let rise in greased bowl until doubled (1.5 hours). Punch and let rise again (45 min. - 1 hour). Divide in half and shape loaves. Place in greased pans, grease tops, and let rise again. Bake at 350 for 30-40 minutes. Brush tops with butter while still hot.

This was a hit. I'm planning to make it again for Thanksgiving because one of my favorite things to do with it is grill sandwiches with turkey and cheese, and dip in my favorite jam. I'm guessing this will be even better with leftover Thanksgiving turkey!

I've been searching and searching for a raisin bread recipe! I've been adapting to a cinnamon swirl recipe that Susan gave me. I can't wait to try this one.
Claire, I wondered about adding raisins to cinnamon bread -- oooo, I bet it's super yummy! This one is definitely less sweet than that. Looking forward to seeing you and your little fox!
Sara Schraag has a REALLY YUMMY cinnamon raisin bread. I used to have it, but I just looked and I can't find it. SORRY! Kate - yours is very similar to the bread I made today - except I didn't add raisins. It's the Rocks the World (Sam) oatmeal bread in More with Less.
oh, I want Sara's recipe!
I was just thinking that it looks like the More with Less recipe that I frequently make. I'm making it today and I think I'll try cranberries... and then make grilled cheese... and spicy tomato soup... oooo, this day is looking cozier by the second! Thanks for the inspiration!
Do we need to start a family recipe blog? Maybe we can get all the cousins, even the Bixes to contribute....I would be game! We really are a talented group in the kitchen! And this way we could keep track.
