Since sometime last year, Mali has been slowly learning to knit. It's been a hand-over-hand experience, so it takes some dedicated Mama time. Usually, she only lasts for a few stitches. Now (it seems like suddenly) she has this new drive to learn, and she is doing it, about 90% all ON HER OWN! I still sit beside her and watch for slipped stitches, but she's basically doing it. Here's what we say:
In through the front door (stick needle through stitch knitwise)
Run around the back (bring yarn around the back of the needle)
Out through the window (swing needle back through to the front)
And off pops Jack (pull stitch off the needle)!
It's a thrill to hear how proud she is after each little stitch. . . moving to hear how rewarding baby steps are, even when there are many, many steps to go. So often we forget what the small steps in life bring us.
