We've been watching and reading Peter Pan lately. The Atlanta ballet will be performing it this fall, so we are testing out whether or not Mali is ready for it. There are lots of mean and violent parts. But Mali is so into the fantasy and the magic of it, we get through the rest. We haven't braved the Disney version, since Disney always seems to be especially scary. Mom gave us a VHS of the old musical. So, the songs bring me back to my childhood. I'm learning things about the stories that I never noticed before. For example, the theory of fairies that Peter tells Wendy, which is that when the first baby laughed for the first time, that laughter broke into a thousand tiny pieces. Each of those pieces turned into a fairy. From then on, whenever a baby laughed for the first time, a fairy was born. And, whenever a child says s/he doesn't believe in fairies, a fairy dies. This folklore is new to me, and fascinating!

Our Wendy told me about the way fairies were born! It is a wonderful story....and once your children are older, they will even enjoy the Disney version....it's just not for little ones.
However, Mary Martin rocks, and I think I'd like to see Kristin in a Peter Pan costume very soon!
